Mission Statement
Urban and Suburban Studies offers an interdisciplinary minor introducing students to the cultural, historical, aesthetic and sociological dimensions of city life. Courses explore the variety of communities, people and places that make urban and suburban life a fascinating but at the same a challenging experiment in living amongst one another. North Central’s location in the Chicago metropolitan area provides an ideal setting for this exploration. Historically significant suburbs, classic urban neighborhoods, new urbanist communities and, of course, the world class city of Chicago itself provide endless opportunities to learn about the dynamics of urban and suburban development. Additionally, students are also presented with the unique opportunity to live and study in Chicago first hand by choosing to apply to the College’s Chicago Term. Here, students will immerse themselves in an urban experience by living in a North Central approved, downtown apartment with several other Chicago Term students, take classes from North Central teachers in the city, and develop career enhancing skills and contacts with a Chicago based internship site.
