Mission Statement
The College of Arts and Sciences at North Central College is dedicated to encouraging students to explore their worlds in shades of gray. Rooted firmly in the institution’s mission to prepare students to become informed, involved, principled and productive citizens and leaders over their lifetime, the programs and course offerings in the College of Arts and Sciences are deliberate in their instigation of critical thinking, written and verbal communication skills, and cultural competency. Professors in these areas are passionate about their subjects and model the intellectual curiosity that characterizes NCC students and alumni alike. Through the study of diverse subjects, such as art, chemistry, theatre, political science, sociology, biology, music, communication, anthropology, languages and cultures, history, religion, biochemistry, physics, philosophy, mathematics, literature, journalism, computer science and psychology, students and faculty become members of learning communities through engagement in traditional classes, one-on-one instruction and original research.
North Central College students are not satisfied with simply receiving training for particular careers—they seek to use those positions to effect meaningful change in their communities, broadly defined. From disciplinary perspectives, we are consciously and unapologetically interdisciplinary. Our faculty members operate on the cutting edge of research and are exceptionally gifted teachers. Students work alongside faculty to discover new knowledge, partner with members of the community, travel the world, and share their experiences broadly. Students might choose to major in one of more than fifty available degree programs or pursue a minor to complement a major in the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and Entrepreneurship or the School of Education and Health Sciences. Irrespective of their path, the College of Arts and Sciences enriches students’ educational experiences and provides the basis for continued learning for a lifetime.
