Teacher candidates earning an initial teaching license at North Central College may elect to add a minor in Reading leading to an endorsement by taking an additional courses. Adding the Reading Teacher endorsement allows candidates to teach Reading in Pre-kindergarten through Grade 12. Electing to add the Reading minor may require a student to take more than 128 credit hours at NCC.
Elementary education majors seeking this minor are required to take an additional 21 credit hours of coursework. Students who want to apply for the Reading Teacher endorsement must take the Illinois Licensure Testing System Test #177 Reading Teacher or Test #176 Reading Specialist test. Registration information and study packets are available online at http://www.il.nesinc.com.
The endorsement available is only for Reading Teacher. If candidates desire a Reading Specialist endorsement, taking Test #176 will apply to both the Reading Teacher endorsement and a future endorsement as a Reading Specialist.
