English Language Learner Minor

Teacher candidates earning an initial teaching license at North Central College may elect to add a minor in English Language Learning leading to an endorsement by taking an additional six courses. Adding the English as a Second Language endorsement allows candidates to teach in ESL programs in grades Kindergarten through 12. Electing to add the ELL minor may require a student to take more than 128 credit hours at NCC.

Eligibility for the State of Illinois ESL Endorsement to a Teacher License
Teacher candidates earning an initial teaching license may add a minor in English Language Learning for eligibility for a State of Illinois English as a Second Language endorsement. Adding the English as a Second Language endorsement allows candidates to teach in ESL programs in grades Kindergarten through 12. Eligibility for the State of Illinois Bilingual Endorsement to a Teacher License
Students may be eligible for the bilingual endorsement to their teaching license upon completion of the English Learners Minor as well as one of the following (ISBE endorsement requirements): - Passing the applicable Target Language Proficiency test
- Hold a degree from an out-of-country college/university where the medium of instruction throughout the institution was in the target language (non-English)
- Hold the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy or the Global Seal of Biliteracy in the target language
